PACO MURILLO

Paco Murillo

His love of the countryside and his passion for wine were born before him, since he is the descendant of a long dynasty of farmers and winemakers from La Rioja. In 1960, completely immersed in the world of wine, he bought an old family farm from the 16th century to develop his project of making wines “with worldliness”, as he calls them.

In this small farm called Las Erres, he began to make the wines he had always dreamed of: smooth, round and pleasant to drink. For this, he adapted the vineyards and the rudimentary utensils he had in order to achieve that unique and personal style. Still today we lovingly conserve that little oenological jewel of Las Erres, where she educates her eight grandchildren in the love of wine and the countryside.

Looking to the future, together with his wife Teresa Viteri, during the 70s and 80s, he developed the winery and the vineyards, adapting them to the new emerging technologies for the improvement of the production and aging, without neglecting the old traditions.

In 1992 he took a step in his career by acquiring an old winery in the town of Cenicero. His idea was to facilitate the work of the winery team and gain space for the incorporation of a new stock of barrels, which will enhance the quality, the “bouquet” and the style of Murillo Viteri’s wines.

He introduced two of his children, Patxi and Iñaki, into the life of the winery, instilling in them a love for wine and a passion for winery and wines. Today, both are immersed in the direction of Bodegas Murillo Viteri.

In 2006, together with his children, he embarked on the magnificent project of building a unique winery, designed with the highest ecological and social responsibility criteria to which his career and that of his ancestors have been so closely linked.

Six years later, in 2012, he received the prestigious BEST OF award awarded by the Great Wine Capitals from the President of the Rioja Denomination of Origin in the incomparable setting of the Alhóndiga de Bilbao, where he had worked 60 years ago. In his speech of gratitude, he highlighted the importance of wine in society, of social responsibility, and of the incorporation of new generations to the winery.
