DOCa Rioja Wines

It is one of the best Designations of Origin in terms of guaranteeing the quality and authenticity of its wines globally, given that Riojas can be identified by their seals and numbered back labels and are required to be bottled at the winery where they are produced. Its other characteristics include its fresh, aromatic and balanced composition and excellent bouquet, making it the current favourite Spanish designation of origin of Spanish consumers (36%) and of foreign consumers (27%).

THE RIOJA DOCa SUB-REGIONS

With its moderate continental climate, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, the vineyard extends over chalky clay soils with gentle topography. The Tempranillo vine is renowned for producing balanced red wines with a stable attractive ruby colour and elegant aroma, and ages particularly well.

Natural characteristics, in particular the climate and soils, have determined the division of the la Rioja region into three sub-regions, each one of them with its own particular character and personality.

We are based in La Rioja Alta, one of the most prestigious wine-growing areas.

Rioja Alta

Our vineyards are located in the autonomous community of La Rioja between Haro and Logroño, to the south of the River Ebro, with the exception of the area to the north of Briones, where the River Ebro divides the Rioja Alavesa in two. The largest towns in Rioja Alta are Ollauri, Cenicero, Nájera and Fuenmayor.

GRAPE VARIETIES

There are 7 traditional grape varieties authorised by the Rioja D.O.Ca. Governing Body, 4 red and 3 white:

  • Red: Tempranillo, Garnacha tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano.
  • White: Viura, Malvasia and Garnacha blanca.

The preferred grape variety for red wine is Tempranillo, whereas for white it is Viura.

In 2007, the Governing Body, in order to regain the La Rioja wine heritage, approved the inclusion of nine additional grape varieties as part of the denomination. The indigenous red grape varieties Maturana tinta, Maturano and Monastel were included as were the white varieties Maturana blanca, Tempranillo Blanco and Turruntés.

Furthermore, seeking to increase the competitiveness of white Rioja wines on the international market, the foreign white varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Verdejo were also incorporated.
